That is quite a surprise. I own a web development firm and find it hard to get good PHP programmers.

Scalability of website rarely depends on the language. It all depends on how you code the website.

Please; if you do get the urge to make what would just be a "Foo is Wibble but Bar is Womble" post, try and be original rather than repeating the same old same old (e.g., "Yahoo and Sourceforge run on PHP"). Probably more people would pay attention that way.

On the subject at hand: the size of the database is irrelevant; the performance of the database depends on the DBMS used and the skill of the person building it.

I had to hire a PHP programmer about a year ago and it was very difficult finding someone that knew how to code properly in a structure that was scalable.

ASP.NET has an integrated comprehensive framework that also tightly integrates with their IDE making programming kind of nice. The downside is finding hosts because it needs to be on MS servers and you can't scale the business logic like you can with Java (JSP alone is actually pretty weak).

Just out of my own curiosty I decided to take a look at aspx.net as I was speaking to a developer last night and he said take a look, so going against what I believe in I downloaded the webdeveloper express home edition and the mssql.

Looking at it Im glad I learnt php becuase this way of creating simple webpages seems like a complete headache to me.

Or thou I have not looked at it properly I can only see this useful if you where going to create a large corporate website or in internal application, but for hobbyists or small business forget it, it would be too expensive and time consuming. The way of creating webpages has been turned on its head.

I love php, the way you can just upload to the server and away you go, its simple and anyone can learn and use it, this is how learnt.

I said to this developer last night why he did not use php, he said that he feels php is unsafe becuase its open source and becuase of his company is all Microsoft he has no choice which is fair enough.

However I find the php bit as being unsafe as complete rubbish, there are many many ways to protect php from hackers, sql injections, I dont think their are that many holes. If php was that bad then why do millions of websites use it.

Eh... there are arguments on every facet of this topic. Unix is typically shown to be a better server, and Windows a better desktop client. I'm not saying one is better than the other; however, each has its strenghts and weaknesses. PHP too has its strengths and weaknesses. PHP by deault is secure. You really can't do too much with PHP to really infringe your servers safety. What makes the server unsafe and susceptible to attackes are the scripts and applications running on it. If PHP, the server, and the scripts are all set up securely and written with security in mind, it's no more unsafe than the operating system itself. And actually being OSS PHP has an advantage to MS. PHP has thousands of users for testing, while MS has a limited base. PHP can get 99% of its bugs out of the way with CVS/SVN repos and such. MS has to have "releases" of beta software (not to say PHP doesn't) but MS doesn't catch their insecurities. MSs IIS server is tied into the system. So if your operating system isn't patched (which knowing MS it isn't) then you're compromised. Unix has less of that opportunity.

Like I said, you could go on for many pages debating which is better. Truth of the matter is: Unix isn't a desktop environment because the GUI hasn't been there (it's getting there). Microsoft saw this and gobbled the market up. Now MS has a great GUI that is user friendly and even the computer illiterate can use a computer. Unix has a very stable and very forward thinking group for servers. Microsoft has a flabby backward serving system. Sometimes you just have to deal with MS, and others you don't. It's just how it falls. But there is no more security in PHP than in IIS. It's a matter of how well the coder created the script, and how well the server admin set up the server.

Don't you think something like the performance benchmark, compiler design internals or integration with other technologies worth comparison, so that we can choose the right technology for the specific requirements...

For a benchmark between two systems to be worth anything, everything else has to be identical, or biases would contaminate the results.

And then the results that are obtained would only apply when everything else is identical to what was used in the benchmark.

It's a bit like when Microsoft was making a song and dance about a few years back about Windows NT earning a C2 security compliance rating. What they didn't say was that the compliance only applied to Windows NT (and nothing else) running on a Compaq 386 with no network card and its floppy drive removed.
