Determining which day it is

I have a table with a list of radio shows.

Each show takes place once a week.

On my homepage I only want to display shows that are being presented for the current day.

eg if it was a Sunday then only show shows that are scheduled for Sundays.

In the shows table there is a day field (which is type numeric). This can either be:
1 (Sunday)
2 (Monday)
3......
7 (Saturday)

How can I determine what day is is to enable me to query only for that day.

something like

if sunday
day = 1
elseif monday
day = 2

query would then be 'select * from shows where day = $day order by time'

This one might be what you are looking for: JDDayOfWeek() function - returns the day of a week.

This one might be even better: The strftime() function formats a local time or date according to locale settings.

Have discovered a PHP method to tell what day it is.

// Prints Monday
echo date("l");

HOwever, I cant get the folloing statement to be true

$day = date("1");
if ($day == 'Monday')
{
echo "Today is Monday"; // prints nothng
}

$day=strftime("%A");
# echo $day prints Monday

Heres another way to use it, if you want to build up a text string

$day=strftime("Today is %A the %e %B, thats day number %j of the year.");
  echo $day;
#prints: Today is Monday the 4 September, thats day number 247 of the year.

This can also be useful if you want the weekday as the number of the week.

%u - weekday as a number (1 to 7), Monday=1. Warning: In Sun Solaris Sunday=1

But as the warning says in some countries the first day of the week is Sunday, while in others its Monday. As far as i know Sunday is the first day in North America and Monday in Europe, not sure about the rest. But im a bit fuzzy on that subject.
