hey hey,

has anyone heard of of a hosting company called hostmonster (www.hostmonster.com)? any good?

dreamhost sucks!

ta.

$3.95 isn't a bad price, but if you want more space and transfer check out Servage.net They upgrade your account free when they get more space. When I joined them it was like at 25 gigs now 110, for $7.50 a month. If you want to use them e-mail me and I'll send you a link so that you can get I think 5,000 more and two months free.

thanks MorphFox. I don't really need a lot of web space so i have signed up with hostmonster last night. i just hope it is not as bad as dreamhost for that kind of price.

and be careful where you register your domain.

          19 days later

I recently transfered to HostMonster after getting screwed by IPowerWeb. Guess what, HostMonster screwed me even worse. They don't enable FTP and other pHp options unless you pay more money. They never tell you about that until you sign up and try to use it. Also, their Customer service sucks. It took them 4 days to respond to my question as to why FTP did not work.

I blew a gasket and told them what they could do with their services.

I learned the hard way to do this before signing up with a hosting service:

Know what you want to do.
Ask them before signing up if they support what you want to do.
Get it in writing! You can save yourself a lot of money and frusteration believe me.

          IX Web Hosting 🙂

            hey pswlinke,

did you mean FTP for uploading files? i have no problems with that. the only thing i wasn't happy about was i didn't know they were not supporting php 5 and mysql 5 before i signed up. they could move u to a php 5 server upon request and a few days' of waiting, but they still don't support mysql 5 yet. nonetheless it's much better service than dreamhost.

Actually I meant outbound FTP from my website. I am putting a Web Link Partner site up that automatically FTP's link pages to users sites. Kinda hard when you can't get an open port on the server!

Anyway, believe IX Web Hosting will do everything I want, http Streaming, outbound FTP, the works. Also much faster, HostMonster page loading is very slow.

Good luck with them, hope you have a better experience than I did!

              RC

i signed up with hostmonster and dropped dreamhost cos it has quite a few good reviews and awards blah blah blah ... there are some problems setting up logins and stuff in some areas.

ix web hosting affordable? good? php 5 and mysql 5 too?

I don't know of any hosting svcs that are using pHp 5 or MySQL 5 yet. They're just too new and not entirely trusted yet. On the website I administer for my job, I tried pHp 5 but went back to 4.4.4 because of some issues. MySQL 5 has some gotcha's in it also but it is working well now (make sure you take strict mode out of the ini if you use auto incrementing keys!).

As for IX Web Hosting, it looks good so far but I haven't committed yet. Am waiting for verification of what I need in writing right now.

                  They have 3 plans:
                  $3.95 - 2 Domains, 100G Web Space, 1,000G Data Transfer, 100 Sub Domains

                  $6.45 - 8 Domains, 300G Web Space, 1,500G Data Transfer, 300 Sub Domains

$12.95 - 16 Domains, Unlimited Space, 2,000G Data Transfer, Unlimited Sub Domains

Sign up with Servage and use my coupon and you'll get an extra 5 gigs and two months extra on top of 1000 gigs. I have to say...it seems too good to be true...but I'm running a custom big cms on this thing (actually, multiple versions) and it's blazingly fast.

                    http://www.servage.net/?coupon=cust26076

What? PHP 5 is over 3 years old since the first public beta version, over 2 years old since the first non-beta public version. And PHP 5.1 has been rock solid for me since version 5.1.2. Problems are rare, and usually are because of poorly written PHP 4 scripts or some other incompatibility with a PHP 4 script, which are generally easily fixed.

www.servage.net is british? with £5.25/month, there's no doubt that i can get an even better hosting service with a US based company.

Update: with +49 dialing code, it looks like it's actually German.

dreamhost does support php5 and mysql5 but the quality of their service is incredibly low.

i find it hard to find a reliable hosting service as there is often "hidden" information that they are not telling before you sign up.

yup defintely stupid bizarre cpanel feature and their not-so-easy-to-do way of setting up things for your sub (add on) domains.

I don't know how to tell you this, but at prices like $2/month, $3/month, $5/month, etc, you are not going to find a reliable host. Companies that have prices like that have them so that they can draw in the masses, pack as many as they can on as few servers as possible (often over populating the servers), and reap the profits. Companies with those prices are generally not in the hosting game to be reliable hosts.

yeah i've kinda guessed that is what is on offer at prices like these... the thing is i only need a little bit of space for hosting my personal site. that's why...

Servage.net is a US based company I thought. seems it has multiple sites, but I think the original started in the US. It does have 3 EU sites. But does it really matter? I haven't found a better host yet, and I'm using servage now. Can't say anything bad about them.

Easy to get php5 working: just use a custom .htaccess file
mySQL5 is already installed, just need to choose from the list when you create the database(s).

I'd suggest using servage, even if you are doing a small site. Plenty of room for growth, and it's very affordable.

                                hey bpat1434,

what's the monthly price in US$ then? it just redirects me to their uk site without asking, offering £5.25 per month.

                                ta.

                                  $7.50 for:
                                  110 GB storage
                                  1110 GB bandwidth
                                  PHP4/5
                                  MySQL 4/5
                                  Clustered Servers
                                  SSL
                                  IMAP/POP
Custom Control Panel (not that cPanel 10 crap)

Well worth it. Plus, you can deposit like $100 and it automatically reduces as time passes 😉

                                    US$7.50 == £3.99! :mad:

that's why i would always prefer to sign up with a US based hosting company directly, always cheaper there. however i haven't managed to get to their US site yet.

                                    anyway, thanks bpat1434.

If you have a credit card listed in the states they might allow you to sign up on the US rates...but I doubt it. Just sign up...geezus...

Servage is one of the best places...then again it's only place I've been. I'm going to try and start hosting sites and designing site now and try and keep the prices down. I will be staying with servage and host other sites on my account through them.
