Has anyone installed Ubuntu?

What are your impressions of it?

I have no firsthand experience but heard very good things from a colleague. I also have heard that the reviews are generally good.

My most trusted sysadmin prefers debian though.

I had it installed on my laptop for about half hour the other week. Didn't really think much of it, though Im pretty stubborn with what I want on my system.

Ubuntu doesn't really offer enough choice IMO. Then again, not many distros do these days. If your comming straight from windows something like Ubuntu is going to be an easy install / maintain OS.

Yeah. Mostly have been working with Windows XP, but also have OS-X at work.

BTW, what OS do you run then? I am assuming NOT windows... LOL!

I did a small stint with Ubuntu when it was gaining popularity. To me, it seems to be Debian's "Fedora". Looks like it was made with simplicity in mind. Like thorpe said, for someone just getting started with Linux, it's great. Very easy to get installed and going. For a more advanced Linux user, it'll seem like too much hand-holding and not enough room to play.

Right This Second I've started wondering.... has there been any research/test implementations of an "expanding" UI? That is, one that starts off with the handholding, but monitors the user's activity, estimates proficiency, and reveals/unlocks more and more of the knobs and switches as the user improves?
