I'm trying to use mod_rewrite (or anything else you guys might think of) to go from http://user.mysite.com to www.mysite.com/page?user=user.

How does the mod_rewrite stuff work? It is apache, but does it go into an .htaccess file?

If anyone has done this recently, please if you wouldn't mind giving me some pointers it would save me a great amount of time. Thanks!

Yes, it CAN go into a .htaccess file. THe best resource, of course, is the Apache manual over at httpd.apache.org

Specifically, you want something like:

Virtual User Hosts

Description:

Assume that you want to provide [url]www.username.host.domain.com[/url] for the homepage of username via just DNS A records to the same machine and without any virtualhosts on this machine.

Solution:

For HTTP/1.0 requests there is no solution, but for HTTP/1.1 requests which contain a Host: HTTP header we can use the following ruleset to rewrite [url]http://www.username.host.com/anypath[/url] internally to /home/username/anypath:

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond   %{HTTP_HOST}                 ^www\.[^.]+\.host\.com$
    RewriteRule   ^(.+)                        %{HTTP_HOST}$1          [C]
    RewriteRule   ^www\.([^.]+)\.host\.com(.*) /home/$1$2

So basically, you'd have something just like above 😉
