problem with hyperlink for download

I managed to display the name of files from a folder but am not able to make it display as a hyperlink such that when i click the link i may download it.

Code as follows:
<a href="../viraj/project/<?php $filename ?>">Download</a>

It display the project directory but does not directly display the file. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks. :mad:

Because you didn't tell it to show itself:
