Question about if statement

I'm very new at PHP so i hav ereally no clue about this. What I'd like to do is, on my website on the initial page, the index, I don't want to link back to the index to be a link. If there is a:

If page = index then link not enabled
else link enabled

sort of possibility in php, I'd be very greatful if somebody could explain to me how it can be done.
