editing php files on windows and mac, encoding on upload etc

Hello, I am on Mac and I use BBEdit but my website partner is on PC and we just had some issues with files that stopped working after he did some changes using his windows editor write/wordpad and his filezilla ftp program.

I love BBEdit on Mac because it keeps the text clean, never adds special unwanted characters and colors the code so it is easy to go through it.
Is there any such thing for PC?

I would like to know what editor he should use so that the code is never weirded out...

Also I am confused about encoding on upload... Should we both use ASCII? Should we use Western ISO Latin 1, Western Mac OS Roman?

Can somebody enlighten me about that?

The problem is most likely the end-of-line character. Unix uses the newline only (\n), Macs use a carriage return (\r), and Windows uses both (\r\n).

Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm) is what I prefer instead of plain notepad, because you can change the line endings in the file. There are many alternatives. You both should probably be using unix-style line-endings.

I've been using HTML-Kit for editing on my Windows PC for some time now. It has a configuration option to save files in either Windows or UNIX format, and I always keep it set to UNIX.

I wonder if that is the only issue...

Two days ago everything was fine. Then my partner made some changes with Wordpad and uploaded them with Filezilla. Everything stopped working.

So I load up a backup... the first line of that backup reads:

Your site may have been hacked. Time to change all the passwords, then look for any recently uploaded or modified files and check them for code a hacker may have inserted to modify all your web page files. If you find anything, be sure to let your web host know so that they can change their admin passwords.

I don't think that was the issue... I think encoding is the issue, I've been doing some research...
Looks like I have to make sure both FTP programs and both text editors that me on mac and him on pc use are set to Unicode UTF-8... does that sound right?

I was going to add that there are more than chinese chars in that string, so a unicode issue could be to blame.

BUT BUT BUT BUT: NogDog may be right, just for the heck of it I would change the passwords. Stranger things have happened... I'm not presuming that your passwords are weak, but after reading this article: http://lastbit.com/password-recovery-methods.asp even I changed all my important (read: shell) passwords to 50+ character sentences.
