[RESOLVED] htaccess style security using php / mysql.

basically, im lazy. im only looking to password protect two files, and it would be easiest to do this by htaccess, except that i want to assign a username and password to a person who registers on my site.

i know that its possible, but its been that long since iv done it that i cant remember how to do it!

i need to prompt for username/password and check it against the database.... but i dont want to have to faff around with forms, id like to use the htaccess method.

any tips would be great.

has this forum turned the way of every other forum in the world? 🙁 for years its been a source of help and encouragement without 'rtfm newbie' type replies. hope not.

anyway - obviously you mistake me for a newbie (i dont post A LOT, but iv been a member here for years)

i did search, and couldnt find what i was looking for.

any 'help' would be great, even if you just point me in the direction of the function that i need.

Perhaps this class might be useful to you; you could add your own functionality to it too.

Like u say every forum in the world, this one don't make an exception and because u have an account from a long time ago is no excuse ...

Just try it and don't be lazy, look I give u a hint: auth php header, how much it cost u? I tell u less then opening a new thread ...

Use authentication headers or mod_auth_mysql for Apache

i already told you i searched, i wasnt lazy, i looked through many posts and just couldnt find what i was looking for, because i couldnt think of the right keywords.

how about you READ my post before cutting me down. if we're talking about stuff that costs nothing, politeness costs nothing.

im not looking to argue here, but i will stand up for myself if im being accused of something i didnt do!!!!!!!

STILL thanks for the help, ultimately i got the answer i needed, and im honestly grateful.

perhaps i got you wrong, if i did i apologise, but this seemed somewhat sarcastic to me, like you were telling me to not be lazy and to try searching (when i had told you already id searched).

my point is that you could have just said 'search auth header' and that would have been me sorted. you knew the answer, you chose not to tell me because you thought i was being lazy, which is as much my fault for not saying i searched already, as it is yours for presuming that someone whod been a member for so long would be so lazy.

like i say... i appreciate the help that i got in the end, and thats the important thing, i apologise if im really flogging a dead horse here, i just felt that you treated me a little unfairly just for my simple accidental omission of 'iv searched already' in my first post.
