sum if 2 fields are identical

hi all,

i have a question for all the masters out there:

i need to output the sum of a field only if the bankname and date fields are identical - example:

database with 3 fields

bankname, amount, depositdate

there are 3 options for bankname:

citibank
wamu
chase

i need the sum of amount if bankname and deposit date are the same

bankname amount depositdate

citibank $20 2007-05-07
citibank $30 2007-05-07
wamu $70 2006-10-25
citibank $40 2007-06-08

what i need is:

wamu $70 2006-06-08
citibank $50 2007-05-07
citibank $40 2007-06-08

and so on with the other bank names
(ordered by depositdate)

any help is greatly appreciated, as i am still learning. thanks to all the gurus out there

I think you could do something like:

SELECT bankname, depositdate, SUM(amount) as total_deposits FROM table_name
GROUP BY bankname, depositdate

(You might want to switch the order of the column names in the GROUP BY clause, depending on how you want the output sorted.)
