Definitely do not use XAMPP on OS X. They don't support it anymore, and it was last updated over a year ago.
There is MAMP for OS X which some people like. I personally don't, but it may be the kind of thing for you.
You can also install it onto the Apache that OS X ships with. There is an installer package which runs as a standard OS X installer if you are not comfortable compiling it from source: http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/
If you need MySQL, there are standard OS X installers for it as well on the MySQL download site.
