Create Image problem

Hey all

Trying to create an image dynamically using the gd library

function create_gif_text($image,$text,$r='255',$g='255',$b='255', $font_no=3)
	{
		header("Content-type: image/gif");
		$string = $text;
		$im    = imagecreatefromgif($image);
		$colour = imagecolorallocate($im, $r, $g, $b);
		$px    = (imagesx($im) - 6 * strlen($string)) / 2;
		imagestring($im, $font_no, $px, 5, $string, $colour);
		imagegif($im);
		imagedestroy($im);	
	}

When i call this function in a script on its own it works as long as there isn't a carriage return at the top of the page, when i call as part of another function i get the following output in the browser

I want to build a class for creating and handling different types of image, and this was just a test function

Any help would be appreciated

So don't put a carriage return at the top of the page....?

Hi Weedpacket, thanks for the reply

If i put this code on its own file lets say test.php without actually making it a function, it works ok. If i put a carriage return at the top of that file it doesn't work... so yes taking out the carriage return fixes my test.php file.

But when i try and use it as a function it fails and produces that rubbish on screen...

Any suggestions? Or does anyone have a sample function? the one i have was "borrowed" from php.net

And .... how are you trying to use it as a function? It should be obvious from looking at that binary data that it is a raw GIF image you're outputting; it should be the only thing you're outputting.

Hey thanks for the reply

Basically i was trying to use it part way through a page. I have a list of items and I wanted to create bullet points so I have a background image which is a dot and wanted the numbers to be put onto the image.

This list might appear halfway down a page and I understand that the headers will have already been set at that point. The function works if i write the data to a file (as you might expect) but i was hoping to create these images on the fly.

I know i dont really need it for this example, but it was part of my investigation into using the function. Can I output the image without saving the file?

Well there you go; you can't just stick binary data into an HTML page and expect it to work. That's what <img> tags are for. Just make its src= attribute point to the script.
