[RESOLVED] Hourly Refresh.

Hi All,

Right, im wondering how I could use a piece of code to refresh a page on the hour. I dont want to use the meta refresh tags, as i want the script to refresh exactly on the hour via the server's time.

I already have a time script running on my site, which pulls the time from PHP, so i was thinking that maybe i could use that as the timer, then use another piece of code to refresh the page.

I've included the current clock code below, and any help would be appreciated 🙂

Well, you could make it simpler and have only one trigger function that refreshes the page, and in body onload set the timer to trigger after X seconds, where X is the number of seconds remaining until the top of the next hour. Calculate the X on page load in PHP from server time.

So as I understand it, the PHP script in the page would pull the server time into a variable, then calculate the amount of seconds left until the next hour. It would then generate the body onload timer to that variable?

How would i go about doing this?

How are you wanting to incorporate PHP into doing this? PHP can't do the job for you. All PHP is going to be able to do for you in this instance is get and set the current time when a page is loaded, then use javascript for the refreshing.

Hi coronet,

I know php cant do the whole thing for me, but the rest of my site is php driven, and i thought it may of been best to keep it all that way.

Just looking for ideas and how to put them into practise.

Well, produce the onload script with PHP:

In page's head:

And before the above is outputted, calculate the number of seconds. Note that the Javascript timeout function takes MILISECONDS as parameter, so multiply with 1000, for instance:


$minutes= (int) date ("i", time());
$seconds= (int) date ("s", time());

$offset= (3600 - ($minutes * 60 + $seconds)) * 1000;

The above is basic example, you might want to work around special cases where the page is loaded exactly on the top of the hour or something.
