Replacing spaces in URL - Help

I have a mail script uploads a file to the server and them sends out an email to everyone with a url in the body of the message to that file for them to view.

I have a problem when the filename contains spaces.

it uploads fine, but the link in the email meesage breaks after the first space in the filename.

i.e

http://www.mydomain.com/uploaded_files/word doc 123.doc

The link becomes http://www.mydomain.com/word

How can I replace the spaces in the filename before upload or when the link is created for the email message.

It's either: str_replace(' ', '%20', $link);
Or: str_replace(' ', '+', $link);

I am sure it's the first one.
