PHP Source Editing

Hello all,
I've been using php for some time now and was wanting to have a look at the source and how to change it and see the result. I've downloaded the source and that's about it. How do I make the changes and then see the effect?

What I'm looking for is a resource for editing the source and finding out how it all pieces together.

Why do I want to do this? -- Just to have a play and add another layer to my php knowledge.

Can someone point me in the direction of some web resource of information on this. I'm sure it's very obvious but I've Googled it to death and frankly feel that I must be using the wrong search queries. I can't even see much in the php.net manual or site.

Any help/advice would be brilliant and a web resource would be fantastic.

I'm guessing your talking about the physical server-side PHP language interpreter? As in all the compiled files that make PHP? To edit them you'd need a proper C or C++ or any good IDE to view and modify the code. Any really good IDE will have a compiler built-in so you can see the results immediately after building.

I guess technically the easiest editor would be the ones supplied in the installation CD Images with Linux, or just google for a C IDE (like MS Visual Studio).
