File Upload Locations...

I would like to create a (image) file-upload feature for my site...

I am concerned about putting all the uploaded files into one directory called "/imguploads" for example and I have noticed that imagehosting services like imageshack.us have, after uploading my pic, the following url:

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/5559/mejr1.jpg

My Q's are:

is the "random" directory (img220 and/or 5559 ) part necessary so people cant parse / browse through a simple directory like say "/imguploads"...(that's my concern)
how is this random directory created : is there literally a new directory created
each time a user uploads something ?? or is it normally done using mod_rewrite or something ?

the larger sites need to worry about how many files to fit into each directory and to keep that data coherent so it can be displayed quickly...

i tend to organize images into client-year-week folders to keep things simpler and ensure that i don't run into space problems...i create the folders as needed if its not there based on the week of the year

Thanks for your advice. I am anticipating a lot of files on this site to be uploaded...

May I ask what you mean with space being a problem circumvented by using different folders?

Also - are your "organisational directories" created on the fly by your scripts or do you manually create them?
(I would need to automate this process I think)

about the space -- its server and os dependant ( our windows servers start to have issues around 2 gb of files in a folder) so splitting the data up between folders reduces the strain

i create them on the fly....first I check for the year folder, based on server date, then create if its not there. I then check for the week folder in that year folder, and create it if its not there...i am using asp for this not php, so the code i could provide won't be as helpful

Ah ic, well thx alot for that Bastien!

Think I'll just start creating new folders (on the fly) after each folder's reached its limit of say, 1GB or so...
