$HTTP_REFERER problems

I'm using $HTTP_REFERER in various parts of my site and it works well. When I use $HTTP_REFERER on my index page to see where members are coming from before they log into my site it won't work. Perhaps this has something to do with the previous page being from an outside site? I'm confused. Any ideas why it won't work?

How does it "won't work"? Is it undefined or does it give you erroneous values?

If the visitor is coming from a link on an external page, it should be giving you that value when it has a value. But it won't always have a value, and when it does that value won't always be accurate.

there is no value at all. I tried doing this with javascript and that works, only problem is I can't change the info into a variable for php
