I need help with a simple year navigation script. What I am trying to do is make it so that when a page loads it loads with the current year.

$yr = date("Y");

After the page loads I need to be able to go to the previous year and the next year. I.E. <<2006>> Click the left button the year becomes 2005, click it again the year becomes 2004. Click the right button the year becomes 2005, click it again the year becomes 2006, and so on.

What is the best way to go about doing this? I have tried using session variables and

 $_GET

to no avail. Please help.

You can do it with $_GET.

if(isset($_GET['year']))
$current_year = $_GET['year'];
else
$current_year = date("Y");

echo '<a href="?year='.($current_year - 1).'">&lt;&lt;</a> '.$current_year.' <a href="?year='.($current_year + 1).'">&gt;&gt;</a>';

It wouldn't hurt to do a bit of error checking on the $_GET variable as well, check that it is a year and not some malicious code.

You can also add an if statement so that the >> is only displayed if the year is less than date("Y") so there's no navigation to future dates.

You suggested that I check the value and make sure it is a date. How would I go about doing that? Sorry I'm very new to PHP.

If you change to first line to

if(isset($_GET['year']) && is_numeric($_GET['year']))

it'll ensure that the year value is numeric, and not someone trying to hack your site.
