HTTP or FTP Upload Method?

I have a FTP site and currently I drag and drop into it from my browser (IE) and my friends do ths same when they have files to share with me.

Then I thought about my newly found PHP skills (REALLY new) and how they could make this process better. After a bit of googling I am lead to believe this is harder than it looks from the outside.

It seems that you can upload using HTTP "Or" FTP as a method? What are the differences and what are the preferences of others (most popular)? And if this is all is beyond the scope of my current PHP skill set (won't take much), what is the preferred ready made script to use.

My files are quite eclectic (sp?), jpegs, exe, doc.... and I am interested in something that can handle large file sizes (1gig+ maybe (never have, but maybe))

Any pointers would be great...thank you!

for large files ftp is better though the connection to the internet is the more important factor, for small files like jpegs etc http is really easy

Not sure what you are hinting at and have little knowlege to ask the right questions (sorry).

From what you say, ftp sounds the way to go. what am I up against here?
Is ftp complicated? I didn't even know you could upload via HTTP (that's how dumb I am (don't hold it against me though)).

Again, I'm just trying to learn, and appreciat any pointers I can get.

ftp is more complex to code, but you may want to search on classes or full apps on places like www.hotscripts.com

http upload is very simple to code and there are lots of examples out there
