I really really really want to start using XSLT over XML one day, and sticking to strict XHTML makes it easier to make that transition. However, my current game project uses html 4.01 transitional because it's much more flexible than xhtml. I've been using XHTML rules while I code my 4.01 documents for good habit.
Also, I don't let auto-recoders (al a tidy, CSE, et cetera) touch my code. One day I tidied the entire advancedpowers.com code base by accident simply because the toolbar button in eclipse was right next to the one for "start apache". I lost several hours of work and had to rebuild my workspace from CVS.
As for double and single quotes, you are right. There is no common standard that forbids one of their uses over another. I guess that one comes down to preference.
