formatting for currency

I have the code:

<?php print ($item_1_price); ?>

which works fine - but I would like a $ and two decimal places.

When I try this:

<?php print money_format('%1', $item_1_price). '\n'; ?>

I get an error. Can someone please help with the correct syntax?

One thing to look out for is money_format is not available in all installs of php. If you are getting a function undefined error that is the issue.

I generally use the number_format function of php. http://us3.php.net/number_format

<?php print "$".number_format($item_1_price,2,".",","). '\n'; ?>

Telling us something about the error message would have taken you just a few more key strokes, or even just one copy/paste.

I'm guessing that it says the function is undefined and that you're on a Windows machine. Going to the manual, you would have found that, sure enough, "...money_format() is undefined in Windows." Then from there you could have followed the "See also" link to number_format() and perhaps have come up with mrphllps solution all on your own.
