Domain Errors from localhost install

Hi there.

I hve just spent several days re-building my website on my local machine using xampp.

I have used MKPortal M1.1 and phpbb 2.0.21

All installed fine on localhost so i did a full database back up and then promptly copied all files from pc HDD to ftp server.

Upon completetion of upload i went to log on to my site but there are lots of errors.

The home page displays with a few missing items.

It logs in to the home page ok with again some missing items, but when i navigate any where within the portal with the exception of forums it directs me to http://localhost/....... as opposed to http://www.ghost-whisperers.org/........

I have search extensively but found nothing to change the settings i have obviously missed except changing from domain server to local host, i have reversed this process but it does not seem to have worked.

The problem is, you're using one of the many incredibly lame web applications which store host names in the database. This is really, really stupid, yet it seems that many apps do it.

PHPbb does, as does Wordpress and many others - worse still, having the wrong value often causes you to be redirected to somewhere stupid, making it hard to change via the admin (if this is even possible; in Wordpress it isn't).

You should petition the developers to stop storing the f**ing host name in the database and just determine it at runtime instead. It's much easier, and it allows people who have (sensible) development environments to transport the database without loads of malarky and pain.

In particular, Wordpress should get off their arse and throw away all the code which stores the host name in one ONE place in the database, but MANY!
