Detect user's Flash version via PHP.. possible?

HI guys

it's been a while.. lost my password. lolz..

anyway, like the title:

Is there a way to detect a user's Flash version via PHP?

would really love it if there is a way.. been using SWFObject, UFO, and other methods.. all are cool but wanted to do my own. 🙂

I think your question can be answered by answering this question:

Is Flash server-side or client-side, and which side is PHP on?

Flash is definitely Client Side.. php ofcourse is server side. .. but isnt there a way or a function in flash to detect plugins and stuff of a browser? i mean, php has functions for detecting what OS, browser, and other nifty infos people are using.. there's gota be something for plugin info..

All based on the client's user-agent string. E.g., Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/2006101023 Firefox/2.0.

isn't there some javascript solution for this which you could get to post back the results to a php script before rendering the rest of the page?

the theory of it is simple enough, get the head of the document echo'd out with the javascript callback to a script which drops a cookie value, then before you echo the body contents you rely on the values of that cookie to determine which version they are running

yes there are lots.. but it's java based.. like i said.. UFO and SWFObject are 2 of the best solution for this out there..

problem is, i just found these 2 to have some "flaw" in some IE browsers.. i've not yet been able to pinpoint what is wrong with my IE installations, but it seems that it just wont work..

these returned the same problem.. it fails to detect my IE's flash player, all flash objects display without any problems..(Flash 9 and below)..

Try asking over at flash-db.com, they may be able to help you better than FlashKit

yeah flashkit seems to be going downhill when it comes to getting answers.. 🙁 thanks though.. im glad PHPBuilder's still as helpful as it was.. 🙂
