[RESOLVED] help with mysql select syntax

im trying to do a basic search query but i cant quite get the syntax down for what I want to do.

I have something like this, im not quite sure what im missing.

$search =$_POST['txtSearch'];
echo "This is the search query: ". $search;

$sql = "SELECT * FROM articles WHERE message LIKE '%search%' ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT $from, $max_results";

You're missing the '$' from in front of "search" in the query.

And you MUST check that your form input data is clean before you stick it in your query!

Yeah this is just on a local test server so I only have access to it. I just wanted to get the query working then worry about validation later. I somewhat got it working but its not doing what I thought it would.

Right now I only have my pagination displaying 3 entries per page. If I search for something that has 3 or more results it shows the 3 results of the search then everything else in the database on x pages. Also if I go to any of the other pages, it doesnt keep the searched results. All my results in my database are displayed instead like I didnt do a search at all. I presume its not keeping my search query after I go to another page.

Ill mark this as resolved since I got the search portion to work. But Ill do some more searching to see if I can find a resolution to my other problem.
