Breaking up a word

I have several words to break up. I am familiar with the explode function, which is easy as long as I have a boundary set for splitting strings.

However, I want to split up the first letter from the rest of these usernames:

jDoe
bFarley
rNixon

So, simply I need to separate the first letter from the rest of the last name. The last name is what I need to keep.

Anyone know how to do this?

$first = substr($name, 0, 1);
$last = substr($name, 1);
