How does php handle spaces once it's submitted as post data?

For a side christmas present, I'm writting a Journal manager for my mother. While she uses small amounts of html, I'm trying to make it as effortless as possible. She has a large amount of journal files, and I'm trying to make it show she can paste these journals into an editor and save into a database and have the Paragraph spaces (page breaks) retain their position.

I know on the client side spaces are url encoded with %20, what do I need to look for in php? Or perhaps I should be looking at javascript to do this?

Any suggestions or ideas would be great.

PHP will automatically decode data sent via GET/POST if you use the corresponding superglobal array.

Don't forget to use [man]mysql_real_escape_string[/man] and check out [man]nl2br[/man] as well.

Edit: To avoid misunderstandings I have to add that these two things have nothing to do with spaces.

Spaces submitted as post data are handled correctly. There is no special treatment required. Just use $_POST and they will be seen as expected.

There is no need to manually decode anything.

Thank you for the comments, though I think the question was misleading. What I actually meant was the space between two paragraphs.

When I submit something like this to mysql, it will handle it correctly like MarkR stated, even when you go to edit it.. it dumps it into a text field with the space between the two fine.

However, when you go to dump it into html, the two paragraphs will displayed with out any page breaks. Is there any way to automatically add few br tags between the paragraphs? Doesn't really matter if it does it while it's submitting or when I dump the tables.

I looked at nl2br() and wordwrap(), but I'd really like it to act like forums do here. So she can paste all those journal enteries and keep the paragraphs in line with out having to manually add a few br tags to each page.

Er, what's wrong with nl2br() then? It does just want you want,
i.e.

Some text

some text

becomes

Some text<br /><br />some text

As liquorivcar mentions, [man]nl2br/man simply replaces all line break character sequences with the XHTML-compliant HTML entity "<br/>".
