Shortlist lost during new user registration

We have a catalog site where visitors can select products and they are added to a shortlist. When they are ready they can look at their shortlist page and we want them to be able to print, email, save or request a quote of their shortlist.

Unfortunately, items added to the shortlist when the user is not logged in are stored in a cookie which is set to expire when the session ends. Shortlist items are currently lost during the registration process as the final step requires the user to click a link sent to them via email. When this occurs the user is redirected to a confirmation of registration page which opens in a new browser window. Therefore, a new session is created and the shortlist items in the cookie are lost.

Is there any method or even already posted information (I could not find) showing how we might be able to not lose the shortlist through the registration process?

Redirecting the user to a confirmation of registration in a new browser window should not create a new session UNLESS either (A) the URL changes or (😎 you are explicitly destroying the session.

So the solution is to either (A) redirect to a URL with the same domain name so the shortlist cookie will continue to exist, (😎 stop destroying the session, or (C) pass the value of the shortlist cookie in the redirect URL so that the confirmation page can re-write the data to a new cookie on the new domain.
