Hello there. A little question here I'm wondering if any of you guys can point me in the right direction...

I'd like to have some sort of a simple script where users can click the mouse, drag it, and select items much like you can within Windows Explorer. Any ideas what technologies I would need for this, or any links that can point me in the right direction?

Well, obviously the "right direction" in this case would be towards the Client-Side forum.....

yes yes I know..... me in shame. the truth is though, I knew that when I posted it in coding, i was just wondering how long before it did get moved.

thing is, not many people visit the 'client side' forum, so I was more likely to get a reply in the Coding forum than in this one. It's unfortunate, the way forums are layed out (not just this one, but forums in general), that most of the attention is focused on 2 or 3 sub-forums and the other ones are much less active. yet I am sure a number of people on the PHPbuilder site know the answer to my question, its just they probably won't stumble over to Client Side...

Ah well, thanks for help anyways! Haha my nostalgic and depressing reminiscing here is done...

Well, that's a bloody stupid and selfish reason.

The precise reason why this forum was started was because some people post thinking that they needed help in PHP and it turned out that PHP wasn't the issue; and also for people who know that what they were asking about was something client-side and for whatever reason didn't want to go to a forum that specialised in Javascript.

Oh, no, I'm sure you're right and they're all just stumbling around totally incapable of reading a page. Every post you see in it was created by me and a couple of other bots just to make it look good to advertisers.

And Weedpacket... I didn't mean to start such a fuss. All I was trying to say, but maybe I expressed myself less than clearly, is that with this collective pool of knowledge that is the PHPbuilder forum and all of its members, it sometimes seems that having one great big forum would be more helpful because chances are every single question people ask would be answered because one of the hundreds of people surfing the forum would know the answer to it. Because there are less people surfing the "Client Side" forum, there is less collective wisdom present there so it is more likely that questions will go unanswered. I was not bashing anyone, and didn't mean to offend by my use of the word "stumble".

Evidently, I was wrong in my "ponderings", since I got a quick response to my post by Installer with some very helpful ideas. Nonetheless, again, I wasn't out to bash anyone, I was just stating my idea that the forum would perhaps be more helpful if it wasn't organized and divided into subforums. Now I know you're the authority here, but still I see no reason for you to take my comment as a critic or offense.

But it's better focused. That's the whole point of having sections. Didn't you stop to wonder why they existed? By posting in the right forum to begin with you're providing information about the problem. By posting in the wrong forum "because it gets more traffic" is to waste the time of people who don't know anything about the field who have to read it before realising that it has nothing to do with them. It looks like a mere attention-getting device from someone who doesn't care about etiquette.

Again, I apologize for what I did. I realize it doesn't follow Forum etiquette, and I won't do it again.

Was what I did a mere "attention-grabbing device"?

Yes. Does anyone post anything on this forum for a reason other than to have it read? No. That's why people like to write "???????????????" after their post titles, or put everything in caps locks, for instance. So yes, I was going for attention because I wanted an answer to my question as promptly as possible.

Does it make me "someone who doesn't care about etiquette"?

No. I try to be respectful on these forums, writing a thank you at the end of each of my posts, helping others, and searching through the forum before asking "basic" questions - though I admit I didn't search before asking this particular one.

So if I consider myself respectful, what in my mind justified me putting the post intentionally in the wrong forum?

Because when considering the problem from a purely utilitarian point of view, it was worth it. The only person who's time I consider to have wasted was yours when you moved the post. I don't believe that anyone spent a considerable amount of time reading through and pondering about this subject that "had nothing to do with them". The question was straightfoward, and people who knew right from the get go they wouldn't be able to answer my question would have moved on. On the other hand, I expected a much faster response to my post as opposed to that which I would have gotten had I put the post in the "Client Side" forum.

So if I think I was right, why are my apologizing?

I am apologizing to you, Weedpacket, because I realize that this means more to you than I had first thought. Upon reflection though, I can see where you're coming from: you probably move dozens of posts every day, so it's obvious why someone replying the way I did might upset you. And that's why I apologize and tell you I won't do it again.

So please, let's not make this into a pointless disagreement beyond that which it already is. I respect you immensely as one of the principal overseers of this whole community, and for the work which you have put in. We may have our differences, but let's move on and forget about this.
