Invalid Argument for MySQL result.

I'm receiving the following error:
Warning: mysql_fetch_assoc(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource

For the following line(s) of code:

// Formulate Query
$sqlAhText = ("SELECT field FROM table WHERE field = ".$verse."");

// Perform Query
$result = mysql_query($sqlAhText);

/* Check result
	if (!$result) {

I think the error might be within my MySQL query. Because I can't get it to run correctly in phpMyAdmin.

Database Records:

Heres the sql: (THIS ONE WORKS FINE)
SELECT * FROM AhText WHERE AhTextNum = 662

Heres the broken sql:
SELECT * FROM AhText WHERE AhTextNum = 662a

How would I write a working sql statement to retrieve the record row 662a?

662 is an integer, therefore MySQL interprets it correctly. 662a, however, is a string of data. As such, you must surround the value in (single) quotes. This holds true for any string you use in a MySQL query.

I understand now. How do I go about getting it to work?

The 662 and 662a is being submitted from the same form and being processed by the same php file. Like I said 662 works, but when the user enters 'a string of data' (ie. 662a) how would I write the sql query to find the both of them (the string and the int)?

For some debug info, try this quick-and-dirty technique:

$result = mysql_query($sqlAhText) or die("Query failed: $sqlAhText - " . mysql_error());

This way if it fails, you'll see both the actual query that was submitted to mysql along with the error message that it returned.

Query failed: SELECT AhTextNumVerse, AhMsARef, AhMsBaRef, AhMsBbRef, AhMsCRef, AhMsDRef, AhMsERef, AhMsFRef FROM AhText WHERE AhTextNum = 662a - Unknown column '662a' in 'where clause'

Another test sees that 662 works fine.

That error appears to state that 662a is not there..? but 662a and 662b and 662c are there in separate rows/records.

662a is a viewable field/row/record/displayed under AhTextNum... any ideas?

There are still no quotes around the verse value in the where clause. Are you sure you saved and/or uploaded the change with the quotes around '$verse'?

The AhTextNum field is set to varchar(6). Does that matter? I don't think so, because if it was int I prob wouldn't be able to insert 662a as a record.

Interesting... Upon first guess it looks like the following ASP code removes the (non-numeric) character from the end of the string.

Looks to me (not an ASP expert) that it's left-padding with spaces. You could do the same in PHP with the str_pad function:

$varialbe = str_pad($variable, 5, ' ', STR_PAD_LEFT);

As to why you'd want to do this, I don't know.
