Recommend trusted SSL cert auth?

Hi all,

After many years on a shared SSL cert (on a shared server), I think I'm ready to purchase my own SSL cert. I've got multiple domains within 1 'account', the domain that I want to get a dedicated domain specific cert for is a 'stacked' domain that was added to my original domain. This stacked domain is being built as an ecommerce site and I didn't want the secured part to be something like

http s://my-shared-web-hosting-company.com/~mymainSite/myNeweCommerceSite

Can anyone recommend a good, trusted SSL cert for a single domain? I'm not sure that it matters if it's a 'stacked' domain or not, but that's why I mentioned it. I've seen GoDaddy's SSL, they are very inexpensive, but I haven't heard much about their SSL service, if it is trusted, secure, etc.
I've also looked at Verisign, but wow...they seem rather expensive. Are there others that are just as trusted or good that are in the 50-100/year range?

i use geotrust normally, i think they are 135 or something/yr

I use godaddy's for our clients. The only thing you pay for with a ssl certificate, is basically the one-time service of the CA signing the certificate. There is absolutely no reason for Versign, Thawte, Geotrust and others to be so expensive. Go with Godaddy. At least they don't rip you off....never had a problem.

Oh, one reason some are so expensive is that they have real people making sure you are who you say you are. In other words, they demand your articles of incorporation, etc, etc. Which is usually a pain in the ass. The idea is that consumers can trust your website even more. the fact is, 99.9% of people out there don't know the difference.

Yah, the whole SSL model is borked. That 99.9% wouldn't know how to read a certificate if they even knew the things existed to be checked.

with geotrust i have never given any articles of corp for my clients... simply fill out their little form and it's done, sure they ask for company name, address, etc... but no PHYSICAL proof of anything and i've never had to worry too much about cost so we used geotrust, we checked out verisign and thawte and geotrust was half the price, so i'm not sure i'd lump geotrust in with verisign and thawte...

if godaddy works, is cheap, guarantees (monetarily) their ssl, then give it a whirl

Wow, 135 is HALF the price of Verisign and Thawte!?! How do they sleep at night??? Probably on really nice king size beds with imported sheets of very high threadcount 😃

they make their money cuz the big wheel companies don't know any better and some higher up heard of them more than godaddy's or someone similar, so they use them 🙂
