Mod Rewrite where $var has a space

Using mod rewrite to change a few pages.

orignal page
mysite.com/list.php?make=toy&category=childs dol

using rule
RewriteRule (.)/(.)_list.html$ /list.php?make=$1&category=$2

I'm stuck.. the variable $category="childs doll" has a space, is there any way using rewrite to change output from "childs+doll" into "childs_doll" ?

output
mysite.com/toy/childs+doll_list.html

I'm trying to acheive
mysite.com/toy/childs_doll_list.html

any help would be great

Not really sure. Why don't you post this in an Apache forum as this really has nothing to do with PHP (other than the script in question is PHP powered.) you'll probably get a much better response.

URIs cannot contain spaces, therefore such a URI can't exist, so you can't rewrite it.

If your browser were to request such a URI, Apache would return a "400 bad request" response.

use a uri_encode function... spaces will be converted to %20

I have just also found a mod_rewrite forum - forum.modrewrite.com I'm looking at that at the moment.

May be i'll have to sort it out in the php script.
