Anything directed by Zhang Yimou is most likely a good bet. He usually works with the same cinematographer, and typically the cinematography on the films he does is outstanding. Only a couple of his films have made their way into the Western world, and most or all were of the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon style, but this isn't the style of all his films, so don't be fooled. I would recommend seeing "Huozhe" (To Live) if you haven't seen it yet.

edit while Chinese films are on my mind, "The Last Emperor" is also a must see.
