php.ini file

Hello All,

Can anyone tell me where to finde php.ini file, I have been trying to install ioncube for this classified script and I need to add a line to php.ini file, I found php.ini.dist but it looks like a test file not script, don't know where to put the line
hope that some one can help me on this...

Mine is in the ....../apache/bin/ directory.

If you run the following in a .php file, it will tell you exactly where it is as part of the output:

<?php
phpinfo(INFO_GENERAL);
?>

I found mine in /usr/local/Zend/etc/php.ini

If you're working on a shared host, you probably can not edit it. Otherwise you can edit it with any text editor you prefer.

How do one know if the host that we are using is a shared one?
If I am just embedding media files (wmv) using PHP, does it make any difference if I do not use a custom php.ini file ?

If you signed up to use any web hosting service, you're more than likely on a shared host, unless you specifically signed up for a (more expensive) dedicated host. The difference is that many accounts will be hosted on one shared server, whereas if you signed up for a dedicated server, then only your account is on that server (and thus you could have access to server-wide configuration items).

For many configuration items, if you're on an Apache server you can customize the settings within a .htaccess file in your web root directory. Whether you actually need to change any such settings for whatever you want to do is a whole different question.
