php mysql heavy usage

Hi,

I have been using php and mysql for years for websites with up to 100.000 visitors a month. Right now I have been asked to built a website that may get a heavy load of visitors. The website will be completely database driven with profiles message boards etc. etc. I just wonder if websites like youtube or myspace with so many visitors need a different sort of approach in terms of how you set up the scripts (communication) in order to deal with the heavy load or if this is solely a server issue?

Every application needs to tackle scalability in its own way. Yes- you can use PHP to run a very busy web site, but you may need to take steps to optimise things which you wouldn't normally do.

Build the application first in the most logical well designed way, and worry about optimising it later.

90% of clients who claim that their site is going to be incredibly busy never actually market it correctly etc anyway, so don't get their massive levels of predicted traffic anyway.

Don't optimise prematurely.

I know what you mean here, but you never know and I rather be prepared for that. I guess I should just go ahead with it and design it in the most logical way in terms of tables and mysql queries.
