Hello everyone. I am new here and semi new to the PHP and SQL languages. I have endevored into a project and I have hit a standstill at the moment with no idea where to go.

The background:

The site is for a Magazine that publishes history articles. These articles are made available online to schools and government officials as well as common joe via a username and password system. Schools and government are set up via ip address confirmation.

However, they also want to have the new articles as they are updated in the database to be sent to a publisher via a ftp site. The publisher needs the files in a xml format.

Ok I have gotten it to the point to sending the xml files to the ftp site. Right now I have the site createing the new xml file and saving it on the site however how do I get to send it to the other ftp site??

Any advice would be excellent..

So what happens exactly? Somebody posts an article and you save it on your site but you also need to upload it to the publisher's ftp server?

Yes and No,

The Magazine Company is the ones that would be doing the posting of articles into the database via a custom built admin panel which has all the feature to update/add/delete articles, manage the IP management. Inside this admin area I am putting in a section for them to send files to a publisher/sharing company.

The publishing company needs the information in xml format which I have already completed the creation of the xml file. From here after the file is created with the information, which is pulled from the database, I need to send the xml file as well as a corresponding pdf file to the publisher via a ftp site.

I was doing some reading and found out that I can do ftp with php but I'm not sure how to incorporate this into the site?

what ftp/php connections did you find? they probably have README files about how to incorporate.

there's also this:

you would need to see if your installation of php has these ftp extensions enabled. do this:

phpinfo();

and look for --enable-ftp in the results.

FTP is enabled to start

here is the code im using to connect and login, without the obvious host, username and password in the areas but I still seem to get an error for cannot connect to host.

Any Help is appreciated

What I am trying to do is send a .xml file that is created on the website and send this .xml file to another ftp. Is this possible and how would I go about doing this?

ok got some head way on the project

but have a question that should be easy to y'all:

I have 2 web hosts that I was testing on 1 with PHP Version 5.1.2 and one with PHP Version 4.2.3

On the one with 4.2.3 the ftp functions don't work even though according to the phpinfo they were enabled.

On the version 5.1.2 they worked perfectly.

Did something change from those versions or do you think it was something on the end of the hosting provider??

There could easily be a firewall of proxy on one service provider that another does not have. Allowing all of your customers to write software that causes your server to make FTP connections seems like a security risk to me. I would not be surprised if a hosting provider were to prevent FTP usage.
