It would be good if there were a sticky somewhere that explains what different techniques does. Of course, people that visit these forums should at least know about Apache, HTML, PHP and SQL, and normally CSS and JS as well. But there are lots of other techniques that are being mentioned here, like Ajax, Perl, SSL, phpMyAdmin and some that are not so commonly mentioned like Tomcat and Python. I think that especially the latest techniques should be explained a little, it would be enough with something like:

phpMyAdmin is a tool written in PHP intended to handle the administration of MySQL over the Web.

In other words, one or two lines for each technique just to get people to know what it is they really need. Then it is up to the person to search for more information and to learn how to use it.

Do people get any response when suggesting things? I don't expect much, maybe a "We will make sure it gets done", "Bad idea" or something else, but it would be fun to at least know that someone have read the suggestion, thought about it for a second and thought it was good to come with suggestions.

I've read it and thought about it.

My first thought is: I'm not going to say it's a good idea, because then somebody might suggest that I help with writing up all those descriptions/definitions. :p

Slightly more seriously, while it sounds like a good idea, the unfortunate likelihood is that those people who are the least prone to do a google to answer such questions themselves are also the least likely to actually look at such a sticky topic, so I'm not sure how much benefit would actually come from such an effort.

A good idea, but I think you're being a little optimistic if you believe that visitors to the forum know all those subjects, some won't have heard of some of the technologies on that list, evidenced by some of the questions asked. So I think it would be a good idea to have a brief description of all of the technologies that are available and how they interact.

When are you going to write it. 😃

If I would have enough knoledge to write it I would have done it already. But I am a noob at SQL, PHP and HTML. I haven't used the other techniques, and only know what a few of them does. So I don't think that I have enough knoledge to be able to write it.

I understand what you are saying NogDog. And it is a problem. I was just thinking about me and others like me that don't have a problem to search and learn, but still need to know what to search for. The forum will still be flooded with posts asking what to use, but it might help some persons out at least. And the rest could get a link to the sticky 😉
