Working out a future time / date

Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this problem I'm having. There's probably a very simple solution.

I'm writing a very simple message board with php and mysql - everything's working fine at the moment, but I've hit a wall - my idea is that, if someone swears, their IP is banned for a short period of time (say 30 minutes).

If I have the time that they entered the swear word, how can I add 30 minutes to it? Say the time was 13:53 - the time they would be unbanned would be 14:23. Is there a built in ability to do this in PHP?

It depends on the date/time format. If it is a unix timestamp, you just add 30 * 60 = 1800 seconds to it.

Your best bet is to convert the time to a unix timestamp, add thirty minutes (trivial), and convert it back again.

You can do this directly in MySQL as well, although I suspect the date/time functions in MySQL are proprietary and not standard SQL, e.g.

UPDATE table SET date_time_field=DATE_ADD(date_time_field,INTERVAL 30 MINUTE) WHERE id_field='1'
