How do I do a "go back" link

I thought I saw a variable that tells what page you have come from but can't recall which variable that is....

I want to have a link on my page that takes people back to the page they came from... I know they could use the browser back arrow but others want this for usability.

So what variable do I need to access to get that information? Can I put it directly in a echo statement something like this:

echo "<a href=$variable>Go Back</a>";

using a 'fake' link however is hated by most htmlcode-purists.

use <span> instead

But won't work for people with JS disabled...

So maybe try this :

Or you could let the user use the back button, that every browser I have ever used, has as standard.
