what happens if php is down?

if my site is built with php and my host's php goes down for some reason, will my php source be visible to anyone who visits the page? is there any way i can present an error message in such a case?

I had that once

The browser then asked me if i wanted to download index.php

i clicked yes, and the downloaded file was completly empty.

So when you PHPthingy goes down, your code is still as save as it ever was.

I'm not sure how php would be 'down', the web server may be down or php may be incorrectly installed. I may be wrong, but my understanding is that once correctly installed php is available when the web server is available, unless someone has been playing with httpd.conf or php.ini

In Sangre's case, where his browser didn't recognise the php extension, all he would download would be the html part of the script.

Blulagoon is right on track - the only way the webserver would ever send the raw PHP code over HTTP would be if someone modified the server config files and removed the .php assocation. Otherwise, if PHP is somehow damaged or corrupted, you will most likely see a "500 - Internal Server Error" error message.
