Text editor?

I've installed XAMPP 1.5.5 for Windows and everything works great, but I'm having trouble finding a good text editor. I'm using a workstation PC for development and I'm uploading pages to my webserver via FTP so I'm trying to test the pages before I upload them as to not waste bandwidth (and its a lot faster). I first learned PHP in school using CentOS Linux but I can't for the life of me remember what text editor we used.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Oh, and it would be preferable for the editor in question to be free 🙂

there are tons of options and i believe there is a huge thread on this topic in one of the other forums (at least there was one a couple of years ago). personally i prefer DzSoft PHP Editor.

Personally I like PHP Designer and have used it since 2005 then upgraded to PHP Designer 2006 last year and now there is a professional version (it costs money) but the free version is quite powerful and also does HTML, MySQL, XML, CSS, JavaScript, VBScript, Java, C#, Perl, Python and Ruby!

It is small in size but a great tool. You can look at the two versions and decide which one you would like to try at this link

as Houdini mentioned that PHP Designer is really powerful software
it is i use it quite alot

Thanks for the replies 🙂 That's one massive thread for editors, wow.

I went to try PHP Designer but I couldn't find a functional download link for the free version. Same with HTML-Kit and UltraEdit. Perhaps I'm blind. The download links for both HTML-kit versions seem broken -- I really want to try that, are there any alternate download sites?
