Simple scrambler

I am storing some data in a mysql database but to reduce a potential security risk for my commercially sensitive data, I am thinking about scrambling the data stored in one field. The other fields are just a list of numbers.

Any tips on how to turn one field of text into something more difficult to read?

e.g. "car loans" into "gbn yrhse"

You could look into using something like [man]mcrypt[/man].

Another alternative would be to use one of the set of MySQL encryption/decryption functions.

Keep in mind that if an attacker can get a hold of your database then it's safe to assume that they can also get a hold of whatever decryption algorithm you use if it's part of the site.
