What is the maximum file size that I can use to upload file to the server using php?

I think most web hosting companies default the setting at 10 MB but you can change that in the php.ini file if you have access to it.

I do have access to it.
So it can be set to 200MB?

Technically, yes it could be set to 200Mb, there's no hard limit other than that imposed by your physical system (and I believe you need twice as much memory as the size of the file to use the function move_uploaded_file). However, I wouldn't think upload a file of that size via HTTP is a very efficient way of doing it.

thanks - I guess ftp is better way to do it.
can user select a file from his computer and then upload it using ftp command ftp_put() or the file needs to be stored on the server?

liquorvicar is right, you can technically do it but HTTP is a terrible way to upload files that large. The HTTP protocol is not designed to (A) dynamically vary packet size to accomplish optimum transfer speeds or (😎 resume transfers if they become stalled or terminated.

You should consider putting a Java applet on the page that works as an FTP client... or teaching your users to use FTP clients.

Upping the limit to 200MB will work in a pinch but it's not really a preferred solution.
