HELP - I'm a newby!

Hi people

REALLY new to php and was wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial for building a simple site by importing the code... i.e. code for nav bar, code for footer etc.

:mad: Really don't know where to start with it and your help would be really appreciated. 🙂

Well a couple of things...if you are new to PHP perhaps learning how to use it with a free online book like Practical PHP Programming. However before you can actually follow along with the lessons you will most certainly learn from the book you will need to have PHP installed on your local computer, but to do that you will also need a web server to put PHP on and while you are at it and in order to fully understand a you will also need a DBMS (Database Management System) like MySQL and you can get them all combined into one program that will install properly on your OS XAMPP you can download XAMPP here . Then you should be ready to go.

Good luck with those and if you really just want a site that sets up easily and quickly then get a CMA like PHP-Nuke, Post-Nuke, or others just do a Google Search for CMS, almost all are free.

Thanks for your quick response on this.

I have got xampp installed and running so ready to code hopefully. Do i need to download something to edit mysql code or is this contained within the xampp package?

Do you know how to set up a virtual server in xamp? I am running php 5.2.0.

The very best thing you can do is to download the MySQL Tools to setup and administer your db. The latest versions are exceptional.

One last quick question... I am trying to run an html doc from htdocs within the localhost area...

I put in this path http://localhost/index.html and it displays the standard "It Works!" page thats comes with it.

I add another test.html page and put in the following path http://localhost/test.html and it comes up with an error 404.

I can't work out why it won't display an html document in the same location.

Any ideas?
