Do I use LIKE statement or is there another way

Lets say I have a load of coloured balls in my table for example

Red ball
Blue ball
Orange ball

I then pull these from the database in to a list menu.

I then use the list menu to search for items that = Red ball or Blue ball or Orange ball

When I then search for these items through a form only the first part of the name gets submitted for example

Red or Blue or Orange

I have got round this by using the LIKE statement on the search page

select from items where item_name LIKE '%$search%';

This is ok but I dont think it is the correct way to do this.
How do pass the full item name through the form like Red ball or Blue ball or Orange ball

Usze quotes in your HTML, then you won't have that problem. Post your code for the form if you have problems with it.
