300KB images eats all 8MB of memory

'ello all.

Could anyone shed some light onto why an image greater than 300KB triggers a memory error and ones less than 300KB do not?

Here is the error:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 6400 bytes) in ... on line 113

Line 113 calls imagecreatefromjpeg

Please note that this script works just fine on 95% of servers .... it is a package.
