Junior PHP developer

Hi all,

Im struggling to work out what a PHP Junior developer would be required to know - taking into account that they are 'Junior' status... Maybe some senior php developers have worked with junior developers here at would be able to guide me into what is required of a junior role in PHP? - How much are they expected to know about the language?

I guess another way to look at it.... would you expect a Junior PHP developer to be able to pass the Zend Engineer Test?

No, I wouldn't. I'd expect them to know the basics: what's a sort, what's an array, what's a loop structure, how do you create a form in html, what's the difference between GET and POST, etc...

Being a junior developer, I'd expect him / her to to be paired up half of the time learning new things and becoming something other than a junior developer.

I would expect them to know PHP good enough to create a blog that they can edit, but I would not expect them to know OOP in PHP.

Well I think you need to look at "commercial experience" also. I have a few years experience in PHP but only a few years commercial experience and still considered a Junior Developer. As a Junior Id expect them to know x/HTML, CSS, JS, PHP and SQL but still have a lot of room for learning.
