Extracting EXIF information in a useful format

I'm using the builtin php exif function to extract info, and although its working, a lot of the data comes up in a propriety format, such as:

MeteringMode 1
FNumber 63/10
WhiteBalance 0

and so on...

What I'm looking for is any help or a 3rd party library that can take all this information and put it into a useful format.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was hoping to get some personal recommendations and expert knowledge, which you can't find on google.

Also, I was hoping to find one which hasn't been abandoned for two years :-)
