Install PHP5, Apache 2.2 and IIS

I am a complete newbie and am learning (or trying to learn) PHP.

The book that I have talks you through the setup of both Apache and PHP. I allready have IIS installed.

when I go to localhost:8080 I get an unable to find page come up.

I have checked the error log and I get the following;

[Wed Jan 31 13:28:58 2007] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/htdocs/favicon.ico

Then it seems to close down.

I have checked for the file on my system and it is indeed not there.

But surely not having a favicon is not a reason to shut it down??

If so I have downoloaded the latest full packages today, so seems a little strange that it is missing.

Question: Why are u trying to run Apache and IIS at the same time? They're both web servers and you only need one.

My suggestion for a newbie is to go with IIS, PHP and have fun. You can tinker with Apache later on.

The only reason is that one of my hosts has a windows server with php and iis, the other server is a linux server with php and apache.

I just thought that it would be good to be able to test in the most appropriate environments.

The book I am working from has steps to have both installed....

The book is Foundation PHP for Dreamweaver 8

You can not run two servers at the same time on one machine. If you are running IIS then make sure that Apache is turned off and if you are using the Apache make sure that the IIS is turned off they will fight over the port used and other nasty things will develop you are complicating PHP development if that is what you are using the servers for.

Personally I would just stick with Apache and disable the IIS altogether since Apache is the most popular webserver in the world...bar none.

I disagree - what's wrong with running Apache and IIS at the same time (obviously on different ports, which I believe darylt is doing)? Though, darylt's reasoning isn't exactly sound.

darylt: You said you wanted both so you could test both environments? Well, since the other server running Apache is Unix-based, I don't see how a Windows environment is really all that helpful.

So, what are you trying to install? Is IIS/PHP installed correctly? Is Apache/PHP installed correctly?

in the very very very rare cases someone forces me to work on ASP (::shutters:🙂 its "nice" to be able to have IIS ay your disposal

that being said... the way IIS and Apache display pages will not look any different to your web users

one is simply MUCH better than the other... and we all know which that is 😉

That favicon error seems to come up when epole first run after an install - don't know why.

Create a default index page in your document root so that apache has something to chew on. Better yet, create an info.php page like this

phpinfo();
?>

When you run it it will return all the details about your php environment and in doing so will prove it is running.

If you run into any conflicts with IIS then just shut it down and go to admin tools -> services and change it from automatic to manual start. No need to burn memory when you can only realisticaly only work with one at a time.
