Error on post to MySQL

My form has a textarea where I paste configuration files from routers, switches and SIP gateways. It's plain text, but I get an error when I post some characters.

Specifically: FXOLOOPCHARACTERISTICSFILENAME = 'MP1xx12_1_fxo.dat'

I think it's hanging up on the single ' character, but I don't know what to do about it. I think maybe escape characters, but I'm not sure. Can you help?

Have you tried [man]mysql_real_escape_string[/man]? You should use that in every variable you use in the database to avoid database injection.
