sending large files through php

I know this is going to sound like something that I shouldn't be doing, but the situation does require it.

I need to upload large files ranging from 10MB - 5GIGs through a website.

I was thinking of using ftp commands commands to process the file.

I was also working on some sort of progress bar.

if anyone has any input or ideas on how to transfer files of that nature through php, that would be much appreciated.
